Diploma in Aromatherapy


Post Graduate Course

A post graduate course to the Holistic Massage Diploma. This is a pre-requisite entry to this course.

Syllabus covers
  • Understanding and explaining the history and development of aromatherapy.
  • Definition of aromatherapy.
  • Definition of essential oils.
  • Understanding and explaining the Holistic Approach.
  • Understanding and explaining basic chemistry to include atoms, molecules, organic and inorganic compounds.
  • Understanding and explaining the main chemical compounds; Acids, Alcohols, Ketones, Esters, Terpens and Alcohols Phenols, and Chemotypes etc.
  • Safe blending procedures, creating a synergistic blend.
  • Selecting oils for treatment. Methods of application to the person either in the home or clinic.
  • Reactions to the aromatherapy treatment. Safety for client and therapist.
  • Methods of entry of essential oils into the body.
  • Explain and understand the Olfactory and Lymbic System.
  • Understand and explain methods of consultation.
  • Understand and explain the need to review the treatment programme.
  • Understand and explain the importance of aftercare advice.
  • Recognise common ailments and contra-indications to Aromatherapy.
  • Understand and explain the purpose of testing oils on clients skin.
  • Understand and explain the importance of referral procedures.
  • Understand, explain and demonstrate Aromatherapy Massage technique including the use of lymph drainage and pressure points.
  • Understand  and explain the term Integral Biology.
  • Revision of anatomy and physiology relating to the appropriate use of essential oils to the body systems.
  • Revision of professional conduct and business awareness.

Case studies are also an essential part of the course and must be completed before the examination date. Case studies required are ten people four times. Students work files must also be presented on the examination day for ITEC examiner to look at.

As a part of this course students are given the opportunity to go on a one day field trip. This would incur an additional cost.

On completion of the course and case studies students can be entered for the ITEC diploma in aromatherapy.

The examination consists of:
  1. Practical examination.
  2. Theory examination. Consisting of one 2 hour multiple choice theory paper.
